2. How does your media product represent particular social groups?
The social group my magazine represents is mainly teenage girls aged 15-21 years old who are interested in unheard of bands and British artists. I have represented them by having a teenage girl on the front cover and having my main story about a boy band. All the photographs are about artists within that age group, as this will interest them. I used bright colours for my front cover to attract the customers however the simple, mature design inside makes the magazine sell well to people over the age of 18. I decided not to have any advertising on the front cover, apart for concert tickets, because from my research I have found that 15-21 year olds aren’t interesting in adverts that are not related to tickets and music updates.
The language of the magazine is colloquial so that ‘Unsigned’ relates to my target audience. This means it is light hearted and fun. This keeps the reader interested as it shows the magazine can relate to them. I used call outs and a lot of photographs to break up the text and make the layout of the double page more interesting to my target audience.
I have also used a lot of photographs for my double page and contents page as my research tells me that a lot of images attract younger people. The front cover of my magazine is aimed at a stereotypical audience, as this will attract customers. I think this is a good thing as you know what to expect from the magazine. Even though teen magazines are seen as childish I think I have made the magazine mature by using only one other colour and simple layouts for my double page and contents page. But I have kept the same interesting features teenage girls like to read e.g. celebrity gossip.
The ratio of photographs to text seems to be even. However I think I have displayed my pages so that it appears that there are more images. I did this because from my questionnaire I found out that people prefer to have more images than text.
I decided to make the magazine's target audience females because in the media men are known for being the more powerful gender. I think by having a female on the front cover and having her story line about how she was brave enough to separate from her friends and try to make it on her own will inspire younger girls to fight for their dreams. I think this is a positive representation as I have shown a strong female character who might inspire the readers.
(i have added images of typical girls aged 15-21 who would want to read my magazine)
3. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
There is a gap in the market for this magazine as it is about unheard of artists who are just making it in the music business. There is no other magazine that sells these types of stories. This gives ‘Unsigned’ a niche in the market because most magazines talk about popular American singers. However ‘Unsigned’ will cover every band or singer in England. The magazine also helps people to achieve their dream of becoming singers as it gets them noticed.
The company that would distribute my magazine would have to be a British company as my magazine is about British artists. IPC Media publishes magazines like NME, they would want to publish my magazine because it is aimed at a younger audience. The company would want to distribute ‘Unsigned’ because it is a new idea to have an only British artists magazine. However as ‘Unsigned’ is unlike many other magazines it might be hard to find one that relates or has the same style. Therefore I will have to research different music magazines that are like ‘Unsigned’.
5. How did you attract/address your audience?
From the results of my questionnaire people have told me that the front cover has to be interesting or they wouldn’t buy the magazine. Therefore I have focused on the colour, design and font, as my magazine is for 15-21 year olds.
The most important feature of a magazine is the front cover. Therefore to attract my target audience I added an image of a powerful teenage girl on the front cover to inspire women. The funky masthead tells the reader the magazine is for teenagers. I also added bright colours and different fonts to make the front cover appealing and stand out; I did this because 70% of people buy their magazines on the spur of the moment. I used a photograph where the model was giving you eye contact because it creates a relationship with the audience. The price of a magazine tends to put people off buying it. Bearing this in mind I made the size of the price small so that it wouldn’t stand out. However as the price of the magazine is cheap (only £1.99) this would attract my target audience as it is in their price range.
I didn’t use freebies to attract my target audience because from the feedback I got from my Blog people did not want to have freebies on the magazine. I also thought freebies were a bad idea because you can’t tell if people are buying your magazine because they like it or because they want the free stuff.
People would want to buy my magazine because of the way it talks to the reader; the magazine uses colloquial, chatty language as well as interesting unheard of stories. There is no other magazine like ‘Unsigned’. What makes it unique is that it has interviews with unheard of bands and artists and how they have managed to ‘make it’ in the music industry.
7. What do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?
From looking at my student magazine I feel I have learnt how to make my practical work look suitable and professional for my target audience, I feel I have understood what specifically appeals to them and I have used this information to make my music magazine. I have also learnt about producing a magazine, the amount of different styles and genres there are, and what layouts and styles suit my target market. From a practical side I think I have developed my skills as I have made my music magazine more professional, I have also used better images for my magazine and greater technology as I hadn’t used Publisher before.
